See a page's commands as a node graph: paths for If/Else and choices, + or / to add a command, nodes you can place by hand, and the running step lit up during a test. The graph and the list are the same commands.
Event graph
The Graph view draws a page's commands as a flow you can read at a glance. It starts from how the page begins, runs top to bottom, and splits wherever the event makes a decision. Graph and List show the same commands, so you can switch at any time and nothing changes.
Where to find it#
Open an event in the map editor. The switch is in the Commands header, next to From Template: Graph or List. New events open in the graph, and imported RPG Maker events open in the list. After that, the editor remembers your last choice.
How to use it#
- Open an event. The top node says how the page starts, such as Action Button.
- Press + on any arrow to add a command there. Type a few letters, then press Enter or click the command. All commands… opens the full list. The new command opens for editing straight away.
- Press / to do the same without the mouse. The command goes after the node you selected, or at the end of the event.
- Click a node to edit it. The panel holds the same form as the list, plus Duplicate and Delete.
- To change the order, drag a node onto an arrow. The arrow lights up, and letting go puts the command there. A block moves with everything inside it.
- To tidy the picture yourself, drag a node anywhere else. It stays where you put it and its order doesn't change. A block's paths move with it. The Tidy button, next to Fit, puts every node on this page back.
- Press Expand over map for more room, and Back to the map to return.
- Press Test on map to run the event. The graph goes back to its panel so you can see the map, and it lights up as the event runs.
What you see#
| On the graph | What it means |
|---|---|
| Starts when | How this page begins (its trigger). Change it in the page settings above. |
| Node | One command. The coloured bar shows its category, and the second line sums up what it does. |
| Paths with labels | The ways out of a block: Yes and No on an If, your text on a Show Choices, Win, Escape and Lose on a Battle. They meet again at a small dot. |
| Dotted "Otherwise" arrow | The game can skip the paths, such as an If with no Else. |
| Purple "Back" arrow | A Loop's path returning to its top. |
| Dashed gold arrow | A Jump to Label and where it lands. |
| Red border | A row whose block is missing, such as an Else with no If. Delete it. |
| Pulsing green node | During a test, the step running now. |
| Green border and arrow | The path this page's latest test run took. It stays until the test ends, so you can read which branch ran. |
On a phone or tablet#
The graph works by touch. To create an event in the Events tab, press and hold a tile on the map to open the menu. To open an existing event, tap the pencil on its row in the list. On a phone or a small tablet, press Full screen for the most room. It has its own Test on map button.
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Edit a command | Tap its node. On a phone, the form slides up from the bottom. |
| Add a command | Tap + on an arrow. |
| Pan | Drag with one finger. In the side panel, a vertical swipe scrolls the page instead, so use Full screen or Expand over map to pan freely. |
| Zoom | Pinch, or use the + and − buttons. |
| Move a command | In Full screen or over the map, press and hold its node until its border lights up, then drag it onto an arrow to change the order, or anywhere else to place it. |
Moving around#
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Pan | Drag the empty background. |
| Zoom | The + and − buttons, or the mouse wheel when expanded. In the side panel, hold Ctrl while you scroll, because a plain scroll moves the panel. |
| Fit | The corner button brings the flow back into view. A long event stays big enough to read, so you may need to pan to see all of it, or press Expand over map. |
| Delete a command | Click its node and press Delete. |
| Close | Esc closes the node's panel, then the expanded view. |
Good to know#
- A new event isn't on the map until you press Save. That goes for a template such as a chest too: Save is ready as soon as it opens, and closing it without saving asks first. Test on map works before you save.
- The graph lays itself out until you move something. A node you place stays offset from where the order puts it, so it follows if commands around it change. Placing nodes never changes how the event runs: the game ignores it. It's saved with the event when you press Save, and Ctrl+Z undoes it.
- Quick add is for the mouse. On a touch screen, + opens the full list, which is built for fingers.
- You can't draw an arrow from anywhere to anywhere. Arrows follow the order of your commands. To go back, use a Loop or a Jump to Label. To share an ending, put it after the paths meet, or in a Common Event.
- A new If comes with its Else. Both paths are there from the start. An If with no Else, which can come from an import, shows only the dotted Otherwise arrow, and you can't add a command to that arrow.
- Deleting a block deletes its paths. The button says Delete with its paths so you can see it coming.
- There's no feature flag. The graph is part of the event editor, and it doesn't change how an event runs in your game.
