Start a full-server playtest standing on the exact tile you're working on.
Play from here
Play from here launches a normal Playtest (the full game server), but drops you into the world on the tile you picked instead of at your character's saved position or the starting location. Use it to test a dungeon room, a boss arena or a puzzle without walking there every time.
Where to find it#
You can start it three ways from the World Editor (the zone editor):
| Entry point | Which tile it uses |
|---|---|
| Right-click a tile in Event mode → ▶ Play from here | The tile you right-clicked |
| Ctrl+Shift+P (⌘+Shift+P on macOS) | The tile under your mouse pointer |
| Toolbar → Playtest chevron (▾) → Play from here | The last map tile your pointer was over |
| Command palette (Ctrl+K) → Play from here | The last map tile your pointer was over |
(In Map mode a right-click picks a tile for painting, so use the shortcut there, or switch to Event mode for the menu.)
How to use it#
- Open the map in the World Editor and save it. Playtest plays what is on the game server, so the map must be published: the desktop app publishes for you on every Playtest; in the browser editor press Publish first if you have unpublished changes.
- Point at (or right-click) a walkable tile and choose Play from here.
- The game client opens. Sign in if asked and pick your character — you appear on the chosen tile.
On the desktop app you go straight into the world as your project's Playtester character, just like a normal Playtest.
What it changes#
| Thing | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Your position | You start on the chosen map and tile. After that the character saves normally, so the next ordinary Playtest resumes from wherever you walked to. |
| Everything else | Unchanged — same character, inventory, level and quests as a normal Playtest. |
| Other players | Unaffected. Only the playtest session you just launched can use the start position. |
Gotchas#
- Blocked tiles fall back to the normal spawn. If the tile is a wall, water or unpainted void, the editor tells you ("Starting at the normal spawn — can't start at (x, y) …") and the playtest opens at the usual place. The game server checks the tile again when you log in, so a tile that became blocked in the meantime falls back the same way.
- "This map isn't on the game server yet." The map (or your latest edits to it) hasn't been published. Publish and try again.
- The start position is single-use and expires after 10 minutes. It applies to the first login from the window the editor opened. Reconnecting, switching characters later, or opening the game in another tab starts you normally. If you sit on the login or character screen for more than 10 minutes, launch Play from here again.
- It can't be shared. The start position is a private, one-time pass issued by your own game server to you as the project's editor — it is not a link parameter players can type, and it doesn't work on anyone else's game.
- Dry Run doesn't use it. Play from here always runs the full server. Dry Run keeps opening at the map's starting location.
- Older game servers. A managed or self-hosted server that hasn't been updated yet answers "too old for Play from here"; the playtest still opens at the normal spawn.
