Items that cast an ability when used: scrolls, wands, throwing nets.
Item Abilities
An item can cast an ability when it is used: a Scroll of Fireball, a Wand of Healing, a throwing net. The player does not need to know the ability — the item is the source — and with **Bypass ability cost** the cast is free, so it works even at zero mana.
Where to author it#
Database → Items, open the item, Advanced tab → Use Ability.
Set one up#
- Make the ability first (Database → Abilities) — its range, targeting and effects are what the
item casts.
- Open the item, go to Advanced → Use Ability and pick it under Using this item casts.
- Choose what using it costs the item, its cooldown, and whether the cast is free.
- Save. Put the item on the hotbar: pressing it casts at the selected target, or at the cursor
for a ground-aimed ability.
The fields#
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Using this item casts | The ability. None = the item has no ability |
| Uses up | Used up per cast (a scroll) · Never used up (a wand, limited by its cooldown) · Wears out: each cast costs one point of the item's Max Durability and it breaks at 0 (an item with no durability is used up instead) |
| Item cooldown | Per character, between uses of this item — on top of the ability's own cooldown |
| Bypass ability cost | On by default: no mana is checked or charged. Off = the ability's normal mana cost |
What still applies#
The cast is an ordinary cast in every other way: range, line of sight, the target rules, the global cooldown and the ability's cooldown all hold. Silence and other crowd control refuse it like any cast, and an Item Lock effect stops using items at all.
A cast that could not land — out of range, no valid target — is refused before the item is spent. Unlike a learned spell, the player is not walked into range: step closer and use it again.
Gotchas#
- A learned spell and an item that casts the same ability share the ability's cooldown.
- Wears out needs the item's Max Durability set on its Stats tab.
- Behind the Item Abilities flag (on by default). Off = the item does nothing on use.
