Player-to-player letters with silver and item attachments, and the system mail that delivers market proceeds and shop purchases.
Mail lets players send each other letters, with silver or an item attached, whether the other player is online or not. It is also how your game hands things over when it can't put them straight in a player's bag: market sale proceeds, market items coming back, and shop purchases that don't fit.
Mail needs no setup. With the Mail flag on, every player has an inbox from their first login.
Where to author it#
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| Turn mail on or off | World → Features → Mail (on by default). See Feature Flags |
| Show or hide the Mail button | UI & HUD editor → Top Bar tab. Mail sits in the More menu by default, with no hotkey |
| Restyle the window, or switch it off | UI & HUD editor → Panels → Mail. Its sections are the tabs, the inbox, the reader and the compose form |
| Open it from an event | The Show/Hide Menu event command, menu Mail. See Events & Cutscenes |
| Reword the messages players see | Studio → Localization → Vocabulary. See Localization |
There is no postage, inbox size or expiry setting. Those rules are fixed by the engine, and the table below lists them.
Setting it up#
- Open World → Features and make sure Mail is on.
- Decide how players reach it: keep the top-bar button, or hide it and open the window with Show/Hide Menu → Mail from a mailbox event, a post office NPC's dialogue, or a quest step.
- Publish. On a hosted game, a feature flag change reaches players only after a publish.
- Test with two characters: send a letter with a little silver and part of a stack attached, then collect it on the other character.
How players use it#
The Mail window has two tabs.
- Inbox. Lists every letter with its subject and sender. Unread letters are highlighted, and letters with something attached carry an Attach badge. Opening a letter marks it read and shows Collect Attachments and Delete.
- Compose. Fill in the recipient's character name, a subject and a message, optionally enter an amount under Attach Silver, optionally pick a bag item under Attach Item (with a quantity for stacks), and press Send Mail. The recipient and the subject are required. The postage is shown under the form.
The recipient gets a "New mail from …!" chat line if they are online. If they are offline, the letter is waiting for them the next time they play: the inbox is filled in as soon as they log in, with a "You have N unread mail." line.
The fixed rules#
| Rule | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Postage | 5 silver per letter | Taken from the sender on every send, on top of any attached silver. A player who can't cover both gets "Not enough silver. Need … silver (… fee + … attachment)." |
| Inbox size | 50 letters | A player can't send to a full inbox ("Recipient's mailbox is full."). Letters count until they are deleted, even after they have been read or collected |
| Expiry | 30 days | A letter is deleted 30 days after it was sent, along with anything still attached. Nothing is returned to the sender |
| Subject | 64 characters | Anything longer is cut off |
| Message | 500 characters | Anything longer is cut off |
| Send rate | 1 letter per second per player | Faster sends are ignored |
| Recipient | Any other character's name | Online players are matched regardless of capitals. For an offline player, the name must match exactly, capitals included. Players can't mail themselves ("You can't send mail to yourself.") |
| Item attachments | One stack (or part of it) per letter | See Attachments below |
Attachments#
Players can attach silver and one item from the Compose tab. Both leave the sender when the letter is sent and reach the recipient when they press Collect Attachments. The item, the silver, the postage and the letter are saved together in one step, so a crash or a failed save mid-send never loses the item or copies it: either the whole send happened, or the sender still has everything ("Mail could not be sent right now — nothing was taken.").
The server checks every attachment, whatever the window sends:
| Rule | What the player sees if it's broken |
|---|---|
| The item must be in the sender's bag. Equipped gear and banked items can't be attached; unequip or withdraw first | "Item not found." |
| The quantity must be a whole number from 1 up to what the stack holds | "You don't have that many to attach." |
| An enchanted, upgraded or rolled item goes whole. Only plain stacks can be split | "… can only be mailed as the whole item." |
| An item marked Bound on modify can't be mailed once it has been enchanted or upgraded | "… is bound to you — modified items of this kind cannot be mailed." |
| The item must still exist in your database | "That item no longer exists in the game and cannot be mailed." |
An item that has been enchanted, upgraded or given affixes arrives exactly as it left, with its +N, runes, affixes and rarity intact. A stolen item stays stolen, and an item's tier is kept.
Collecting is all or nothing. If the bag has no room for the attached item, nothing is collected, the player sees "Cannot collect — inventory is full.", and the letter keeps its attachment.
System mail#
Some letters come from System rather than from a player. Your game sends them automatically, and you can't write them yourself: there is no event command or admin tool that sends mail.
| Sent when | Subject | Attached |
|---|---|---|
| A market listing sells while the seller is offline | Market Sale | The sale price, minus tax |
| A market listing expires while the seller is offline | Listing Expired | The unsold item |
| A premium shop purchase can't go straight into the bag (the player is offline, or the bag is full) | Premium Shop Purchase | The purchased item |
| The game owes the player an item and their bag has no room — a quest, achievement, dungeon, arena, pet-battle or location reward, a gift from a conversation or event, a tamed or hatched pet, a bred egg, a station or building piece they picked up, or materials a craft handed back | Bag full: 3× Iron Ore | The item itself |
A seller who is online gets their silver or item back directly, with no letter. See Market & Trading.
These letters are delivered even when the inbox is already full, so a sale or a purchase is never lost to a full mailbox. The player is warned that their mailbox is over capacity and asked to clear it.
In a world with mail switched off, Bag full items are held instead, and move into the bag by themselves once there is room.
Gotchas#
- Turning Mail off holds system mail instead of losing it. Offline market proceeds, returned listings and overflow shop purchases are still recorded, but with no inbox to open they are added straight to the player's bag: at their next login, and every few minutes while they play. The player sees "N held deliveries were added to your bag." If the bag is full, the rest wait ("N deliveries are waiting for you — make room in your bag to receive them.") and are added once there is room. Held deliveries don't expire while Mail is off. Player-to-player sending, reading and deleting are refused with "This feature is currently disabled."
- Expired letters take their attachments with them (while Mail is on). Uncollected silver or items are deleted after 30 days, not returned. Tell your players to collect promptly.
- A letter with an uncollected attachment can't be deleted. The player gets "Collect attachments first.", which usually means they need to free up bag space.
- Silver that would not fit stays in the letter. A character holds at most 2,147,483,647 silver. Collecting a letter that would pass that is refused and the letter keeps everything in it; the player spends some silver and collects again. Such a letter is the one exception to the 30-day rule above: if it reaches its 30 days while its silver still cannot fit (checked while the character is online), it is kept and gets another 30. See the largest balance the game stores.
- Postage is charged on every send, including letters without attachments. It is a small silver sink you can't adjust.
- The sender's name is saved with the letter, so it survives a server restart. Letters sent before this was added (engine update of 2026-09-27) still show their sender as "Player".
- Hiding the Mail button doesn't turn mail off. A hidden button just removes that way in. Players can still open the window through any Show/Hide Menu → Mail event you author.
