Abilities and passives a character gains when it reaches a level, like an RPG Maker class's skill list.
Learn at Level
Learn at level is the list of abilities and passives a character gains as it levels — an RPG Maker class's skill list. "At level 5, learn Fireball." It can count from the character level or from one skill's level ("at Fire Magic 10"), and it can teach on the spot or just open a trainer, a skill book or a points purchase at that level.
It lives on Database → Characters → (a character) → Progression → Learn at level, and on Database → Characters → Classes → (a class) → Progression. A class's rows add on top of the character template's.
Setting it up#
- Make the abilities and passives first (Database → Abilities, Database → Passives).
- Open Database → Characters, pick a character and open the Progression tab.
- Under Learn at level, click + Add row.
- Fill the row (fields below) and repeat for each ability.
- Save, then Publish.
Fields#
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ability / Passive | What is learned. Pick Ability or Passive, then the record |
| Level | The level that unlocks it |
| Counted from | Character level, or A skill's level (then pick the skill) |
| How it arrives | Learned automatically — taught on the spot. From a trainer — a trainer NPC that teaches it only opens the lesson at this level (the lesson shows greyed out until then). From its skill book — the book only works from this level, and is not used up before. Bought with points — pick the pool and cost |
| Hotbar | Put a newly learned ability on the first free hotbar slot |
| Notify | Show the Ability Learned notification card |
| Common event | A common event to run when it is learned |
How it behaves#
- Once each. A row teaches once. If the player forgets the ability later, it does not come back on the next level.
- Catch-up on login. A player already past a row's level when you add it learns it the next time they log in (quietly — no card).
- Going down keeps it. Losing levels (a respec, an admin change) never takes a learned ability away.
- Abilities in no row work as before. A skill book or trainer for an ability that is not in a From its skill book / From a trainer row behaves exactly as it always did.
- Classes merge on top. A class row with the same row id as a template row replaces it; otherwise both lists apply.
- The learned-ability cap applies. At the cap a row waits, and teaches once the player has room.
RPG Maker import#
Importing an RPG Maker project (with Actors & classes ticked) creates or updates a class for each RPG Maker class and fills its Learn at level list from its Skills to Learn table: one Learned automatically row per skill, at its level, counted from the character level. Skills that were not imported are left out. Re-importing replaces the imported rows and keeps rows you added.
Gotchas#
- Validation. A row with no ability, a skill row with no skill, or a points row with no pool blocks the save.
- Bought with points rows are checked by the server: the level must be reached and the pool must hold the cost; what is bought stays learned, even after a pool reset. The buy button in the Skills window arrives with the skill board window.
- Hotbar only applies to abilities; passives never go on the hotbar.
- Feature flag. Needs Progression Profiles in Feature Flags. Off = rows are ignored (kept, not deleted).
- A row's Level is the character's level under its Progression Profile.
